Quick Response Resolves Small Mudslide at Oak Knoll on January 19

As a result of the continuing rains from El Nino, a slope on the Oak Knoll property facing Mountain Boulevard apparently became over-saturated with water and a resulting mudslide caused a 30-foot tall by 20-foot wide section of the slope to come down. The slide occurred late Tuesday morning, January 19. Once informed about the slide, SunCal representatives quickly inspected the damage and assembled a civil engineer, a geotechnical engineer and an engineering contractor to immediately clean up the dirt and debris, some of which had spilled into the sidewalk and street. In addition, SunCal’s soils engineer assessed the situation to give input on the best way to temporarily halt further movement and to discuss with City staff permanent solutions to effectively stabilize the soil. By the end of the day, the contracting firm had put temporary corrective measures in place that included straw waddles and hay bales to prevent debris from making its way into the roadway. Additional short-term fixes, including plastic sheeting and sandbags, have been put into place to protect the exposed area from water and further erosion during the coming rainstorms.
